Barcelona SC (BAR)
Overview
Barcelona Sporting Club, commonly called Barcelona SC or simply Barcelona, is an Ecuadorian football club based in Guayaquil. Founded in 1925, the club plays at Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha, Ecuador's largest stadium with a 57,000-spectator capacity.
Barcelona SC is Ecuador's most decorated club with 16 national championships to its credit. Nicknamed "El Ýdolo" (The Idol), the club enjoys immense popularity not only in Guayaquil but throughout the country. The club's yellow and black colors have become emblematic of Ecuadorian football.
The club's history is marked by an intense rivalry with LDU Quito, forming "El Clásico del Astillero", Ecuador's most important derby. These passionate confrontations divide the country between Guayaquil and Quito supporters, creating an electric atmosphere at each encounter.
On the international scene, Barcelona SC has regularly participated in Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. The club notably reached the Copa Libertadores final in 1990, losing to Paraguay's Olimpia, but thus demonstrating Ecuadorian football's level.
The Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo, the club's home, is a true fortress where opponents struggle to win. The atmosphere created by Barcelonista supporters, particularly the "Barra Brava" from the South stand, makes each home match an impressive spectacle and unique experience in South American football.
