Overview
FK Shakhtar Donetsk is Ukraine's most successful and prestigious club along with Dynamo Kyiv. Founded in 1936 in the industrial city of Donetsk, the club had to relocate to Kyiv then Lviv due to conflict in eastern Ukraine since 2014. Shakhtar competes in Ukrainian Premier League and currently plays matches at Oblasny SportKomplex Metalist in Kharkiv or other stadiums depending on security situation.
Shakhtar boasts exceptional record with 14 Ukrainian championships, 13 Ukrainian Cups, and especially 1 UEFA Cup won in 2009, last non-Big Five league club to win a major European competition. Under Mircea Lucescu's direction then later Luís Castro, the club developed offensive and technical playing style based on recruiting quality Brazilian talents.
Legendary players like Andriy Pyatov, Darijo Srna, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Willian, Fernandinho, Douglas Costa and more recently Mykhailo Mudryk shone in orange and black. Shakhtar maintains intense historic rivalry with Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian Classic. Despite conflict-related difficulties, the club continues to participate in Champions League and train young talents. The Miners represent Ukrainian people's resilience and continue to carry Ukraine's colors high in Europe.
