Two points from 18 games. Zero wins. 16 points adrift of safety. The numbers tell a story of complete collapse.
Wolverhampton Wanderers arrive at Old Trafford on Tuesday night not just as underdogs, but as a club staring into the abyss. If they lose to Manchester United, they will become the first team in Premier League history to go half a season without a single victory.
Nobody saw this coming.
Rob Edwards has had enough
When Wolves hired Rob Edwards from Middlesbrough in November, there was hope. A fresh start. New ideas. A chance to salvage something from a season that had already gone badly wrong under Vitor Pereira.
Seven games later, Edwards has presided over seven defeats. Not a single point collected.
"It's another loss, so it's difficult," Edwards said after Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool. His voice carried a weight that went beyond frustration. "I said to the lads I'm getting really fed up of this and I know they're hurting as well."
The numbers are staggering. Wolves are winless in 18 Premier League matches this season, and their last top-flight victory came in May. They have lost 25 league games in 2025. One more defeat tonight, and they will match Ipswich Town's unwanted record of 26 losses in a single calendar year.
Relegation isn't a question anymore. It's a mathematical certainty waiting to be confirmed.
United sense an easy night
On the other end of the spectrum, Manchester United are quietly building momentum under Ruben Amorim. The Boxing Day victory over Newcastle – a 1-0 win sealed by Patrick Dorgu's stunning volley – marked their first home clean sheet since September.
Just three weeks ago, these two sides met at Molineux. United ran riot in a 4-1 demolition, with Bruno Fernandes orchestrating the destruction. That result feels like ancient history now, but it underlines the gulf between these clubs.
The Portuguese playmaker won't be involved tonight. A soft tissue injury keeps him sidelined, though Amorim couldn't resist a knowing smile when asked about his captain's eagerness to return.
"There is no chance he is going to play against Wolves, you can write that," the manager laughed at his press conference.
Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire also miss out. Mason Mount remains a doubt after limping off against Newcastle. Yet even a depleted United squad should have more than enough to handle this opposition.
The weight of history
What makes Wolves' situation so painful is the contrast with recent memory. Last season, under Vitor Pereira, they secured back-to-back victories against United. Pablo Sarabia's free-kick sealed a 1-0 triumph at Old Trafford in April 2024, part of a club-record six-game winning streak that ensured survival.
That feels like a different era.
Tonight, Wolves will take the field without André, their Brazilian midfielder suspended after collecting his fifth yellow card at Anfield. It's a telling absence – one of their few bright sparks, now unavailable when they need him most.
Edwards faces selection headaches everywhere. Rodrigo Gomes, Toti Gomes, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Marshall Munetsi are all injured. Emmanuel Agbadou is away at the Africa Cup of Nations. The cupboard is bare.
Can anything change?
In his more optimistic moments, Edwards points to second-half performances that showed fight. Against Liverpool, Wolves improved considerably after the break. Against Brentford before that, they were level at halftime before capitulating.
"The feeling in the second half, we need to try and harness that," Edwards reflected. "What I saw was a team that was full of running, endeavour, brave, took risks and showed a lot of quality as well against a top team."
Quality in patches won't save Wolves. They need results. And right now, there's no indication those results are coming.
Manchester United have won eight of their last 11 Premier League meetings with Wolves. The bookmakers give the hosts a 70% chance of victory. Everything points to another painful evening for the visitors.
Kick-off at Old Trafford is 20:15 GMT. Wolves supporters will hope for a miracle. What they'll likely witness is another chapter in their club's darkest season.
