In a recent report, The Sun stated that West Ham United are ready to launch a £12m bid for Sheffield United defender John Egan. It has been mentioned that the Hammers are preparing to move in for the Irish centre-back during the January transfer window.
Egan’s Impressive Season In The Championship Thus Far
Egan is having another solid campaign at Bramall Lane as he produced a handful of dominant performances for the Blades on the defensive end of the field. The 29-year-old picked up one assist in eight matches for the Yorkshire club this season across multiple competitions.
The 26-time Republic of Ireland international has been a rock at the back based on his average of 1.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 4.4 clearances per game in the EFL Championship. He was even been tidy when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 76.9% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Egan is under contract at Sheffield United until the summer of 2024 which could open the door for the Hammers to secure his services in January or at the end of this campaign.
Is Egan A Good Fit For West Ham United Boss David Moyes?
Egan is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He is usually quick to spot the danger and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot.
Standing at 1.85, Egan can be a dominant presence in the air as well and is proficient at playing his way out from the back. Therefore, he could be a good fit for David Moyes‘ style of play at the London Stadium. The York-born talent has got enough Premier League experience under his belt and is well-equipped to make an instant impact at the London club.
We can expect Egan to add more bite and steel to West Ham‘s backline. He is undoubtedly good enough to serve as a decent player in Moyes’ squad.
At 29, the Republic of Ireland international is enjoying the peak stage of his playing career, so he will be a good, short-term signing for the Hammers this winter. With all things considered, Moyes should focus on trying everything he can to lure Egan to the English capital when the transfer window reopens at the start of next year.
