Rio Ferdinand predicts Ten Hag will drop two key stars for Man Utd vs Liverpool

Rio Ferdinand believes Erik ten Hag will drop Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire for Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool on Monday evening.

Both United and Liverpool are searching for their first win of the new Premier League season ahead of their fixture at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has lost both of his games in charge of United so far, while Liverpool have been held by both Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Ronaldo led the line in United’s 4-0 defeat to Brentford last weekend, while Maguire has partnered Lisandro Martinez in both of their Premier League games so far.

But Ferdinand feels Ten Hag will opt to bring back Anthony Martial, who missed the start of the campaign due to a hamstring injury, to replace Ronaldo in attack, while Maguire will drop to the bench to allow Varane to make his first start of the new season.

When asked to give his selection prediction for United’s clash with Liverpool, Ferdinand told Vibe With Five: ‘I have a big one, I think Cristiano Ronaldo won’t play tonight, I think he [Ten Hag] won’t play him.

‘There’s something inside me thinks he’s not going to pick him and he’s going to go and thicken things up in midfield a little bit.

‘I think he’ll try to press still, he’ll still try to impose his own DNA on this game.

‘If Varane’s fit I think he starts – they’re the two big ones, for me, that I think will be the case today.

‘I’m actually scared about tonight’s game.’

United supporters are also planning to protest against the Glazer family before the match at Old Trafford and Ferdinand has urged fans to ‘demonstrate peacefully’ against the club’s owners.

‘I’m not a person who is against protesting, I think people have the right to protest.

‘As long as it’s done peacefully, I think that’s the big thing for me, a peaceful protest isn’t something I’m against.

‘I think that if the fans feel that’s the way they want to show concern for certain issues then so be it.

‘Whether that resonates with the people concerned that they’re protesting to remains to be seen. But until someone comes with that big, fat chequebook and the number they want they’re not going to budge.
