Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side are favourites to claim the final Champions League spot this season, and the fans have shown their backing to the manager once again
Arsenal supporters were in fine voice after their 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday. And no surprise, as the result took them a step closer to Champions League qualification.
The Gunners are currently fourth, four points clear of Manchester United with a game in hand. They are now in pole position to earn that coveted final top four spot with outside challengers Tottenham eight points adrift.
Mikel Arteta is on the brink of bringing Champions League football back to the Emirates Stadium for the first time since the 2016/17 season. The Arsenal faithful who travelled to Villa Park voiced their praise for their manager and his European push at full time in the form of a chant.
They sang: “We’ve got Super Mik Arteta, he knows exactly what we need; Kieran (Tierney) at the back, Gabi (Martinelli) in attack, Arsenal on the way to Champions League.” Arteta noted the chant in his post-match press conference, saying it brings a “sense to everything we do.”
He added: “You realise in those moments that those people have real emotion to the club and you can make them happy then everything just makes sense. The connection that they showed with the players and with me as well you just have to be very grateful because they have come along on this journey and I think believe on what we do.
“Personally, it’s great because we’ve been through a lot and we played nearly two years with no crowds. To gain something that, in my opinion, was the most important thing which is unity around the club and a sense of direction and belonging, it was going to be really important and it produces belief and energy.”
Arteta described the result as a “big win” and felt his side deserved the three points. He said: “[We] showed a lot of personality to come and play, the way we dominated the game and to come away with the win at the end.”
