Mikel Arteta provides Aubameyang injury update ahead of Man City and Chelsea fixtures

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been ruled out of Arsenal’s EFL Cup clash against Manchester City and is a doubt for their next Premier League fixture against Chelsea, Mikel Arteta has confirmed.

Aubameyang, who has endured a frustrating season, missed Arsenal’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Everton on Saturday with a calf problem.

The injury has also ruled Aubameyang out of Tuesday’s EFL Cup quarter-final clash against Arteta’s former club Man City, while he is a doubt for the Boxing Day fixture against London rivals Chelsea.

‘Auba is not fit for tomorrow, that’s for sure, he won’t be playing tomorrow,’ Arteta said at his pre-match press conference on Monday morning.

‘[He] is feeling much better. He was more positive yesterday [Sunday] than in the previous two days. ‘He will have another scan in the next few days and we will see how quickly we can get him back in the team.

‘But he knows how important he is for us, he feels the responsibility and he is trying his best to be fit as quick as possible.’

Aubameyang scored in Arsenal’s first two games of the 2020-21 campaign but has netted just two Premier League goals since. The Gabon international’s struggles have coincided with a shocking run of form for Arsenal, who slipped to their eighth defeat of the season last weekend.

Arsenal are currently 15th in the Premier League – ten points behind the top-four and just three places above the relegation zone.

On Tuesday, they face EFL Cup holders and seven-time champions Manchester City, who beat Southampton in their last outing.

Arteta wants his Arsenal team to view their upcoming clash with Man City as a welcome ‘distraction’ from their poor league form. He said:

‘This is what we want to use it for, as well it’s a competition we want to try to win.

‘We have two difficult opponents before in Leicester and Liverpool, we managed to beat them both and now we are playing at home and we are one step closer to Wembley.

‘So it is a really nice game to play, as this is the type of game we are looking for through the season.’
