The Gunners boss is in desperate need of new recruits to turn the north London club’s season around, but it doesn’t look like he’ll have the financial backing to do so this month.
Arsenal have so far made just one signing, snapping up youngster Omar Rekik.
The Emirates club have also been linked with Norwich City striker Emiliano Buendia, but have reportedly been quoted a fee in the region of £30m, which has made things difficult.
Outgoings at Arsenal include Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba, with the defenders freeing up some money by reducing the wage bill in north London.
Mesut Ozil’s future being decided this month could also play a big part in how much business Arsenal complete this January.
If the German leaves, and frees up his £350,000-a-week wages, then Arsenal will be in a great position to make a new signing.
If Arsenal fail to get Ozil off their books then Arteta may have to keep the chequebook stashed away for the time being.
Whatever happens though, the Gunners boss will have around £20m to spend this month, according to the Transfer Window podcast.
Arsenal’s technical director Edu has previously spoken out about the Gunners’ view on transfer windows, saying the summer is when they’ll look to splash the cash.
He did however admit that Arsenal could do with a creative player in the middle of the park.
It’s quite clear what we need,” said Edu, at a fans’ forum. “We need a player with creativity in the middle, we don’t have that in the squad right now.”
