Arsenal are interested in bringing Serge Gnabry back to the Emirates and the Bayern Munich star would not be opposed to a return, according to reports in Germany.
After struggling to get in the first team at Arsenal – and only playing once during a dispiriting loan spell at West Brom – the winger moved to Werder Bremen for just £5million in 2016, signing for Bayern a year later.
He has since emerged as a key player for both the Bavarians and the German national team, netting 14 goals and laying on five assists in the most recent Bundesliga campaign.
However, Gnabry only has one year left on his contract at the Allianz Arena and is believed to be weighing up his options, with the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool linked with moves.
Though it could be a more familiar club who make the biggest push to sign Gnabry, with Bild reporting that the Gunners are interested in trying to bring the attacker back to north London.
The 26-year-old joined Arsenal’s academy from Stuttgart in 2011 as a teenager and actually played alongside Mikel Arteta – who, of course, now manages the Gunners.
Arsenal’s interest may not be a pipedream, either, with Gnabry said to be open to the possibility of returning to the Emirates.
However, any deal has been made far harder by Arsenal’s failure to qualify for the Champions League – both from a financial and sporting perspective – and a reunion this summer is considered unrealistic, particularly with Arteta having other transfer priorities he needs to address first.
But Arsenal could be a serious option for Gnabry next summer if he does not renew his contract with Bayern, when he will be available on a free transfer.
Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness confirmed that the German champions had made a ‘great’ offer to Gnabry but he has yet to commit to fresh terms and could be one of a growing list of players to leave the Bavarian club on a free transfer.
‘It’s the same situation as with [Niklas] Sule. I think he has a great offer from Bayern and now has to make a decision,’ he told RTL when asked about Gnabry’s situation.
‘Your media drives me crazy with these free transfer things. What do you want to do? Should you stuff the players with money until they say yes or maybe choke on it?’
Sule has agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer while David Alaba also ran down his contract last year before joining Real Madrid; Robert Lewandowski is out of contract next summer and also threatening to leave on a free if he is not allowed to move to Barcelona.
