Mikel Arteta impressed as Arsenal enter battle to sign top England international

The London giants are preparing for a future without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Arsenal are willing to listen to offers for the centre-forward in winter and have already prepared a list of possible replacements. One of the options the Gunners are considering is Ollie Watkins.

It appears the Spanish manager is a huge fan of the Aston Villa striker due to his style of play that resembles Gabon international, to an extent. Although Arsenal acknowledges that England international cannot be pursued in winter, they are set to keep close tabs on the striker’s situation ahead of a possible move in the summer.

Watkins has enjoyed stellar success since moving to Villa Park in 2020. Ollie scored 14 goals in his debut season in the PL while supplying seven assists. The 26-year-old striker has not been as prolific in the new campaign but stays a valuable asset to the club due to his pace and tactical flexibility in the final third.

A striker by trade, the English striker can play out wide if required, while his technical prowess allows him to link up well. It makes him an appealing target for the Spanish manager, who is looking for a replacement for the Gabonese striker either in winter or in the summer transfer window.

The addition of the Englishman, to that end, could be a smart move by the Gunners, although the club has no shortage of alternatives. Arsenal are also likely to part ways with Nketiah and even Balogun, preferably on a temporary deal.
