Should Arsenal succeed in their reported chase of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, the impact on the first-team squad could be significant enough to solidify their top-four chase and long-term progression.
The idea of Arsenal adding a player of Bruno Guimaraes’ quality to the Arsenal team is what the excitement of the transfer window is all about. With this move, however, there is a real chance of it becoming a reality and Edu should do everything he can to make sure it does.
The transfer window brings the excitement of possibility to the Arsenal fan base. When links appear to players who are certain to improve the squad, it is difficult to not get caught up in a desperate want to see the player join.
For myself, Bruno Guimaraes represents one of those very players. Arsenal are currently linked with a move for the Lyon midfielder and the recent stories coming through look encouraging on the surface.
For clarity, the links to the Brazilian have persisted since before his move to Europe. Initially playing for Athletico Paranaense in Brazil, Arsenal were linked with a move before Lyon pressed with a greater ambition to secure the midfielder.
However, the club’s interest has not waned and in the summer of 2021, the player himself confirmed the interest from the Gunners.
“Arsenal approached my agent, but there was no offer. My aim, and I made it clear to Juninho, is to win a title with Lyon,” the then 23-year-old said to Globo via GFFN.
“The fans have not had one for a long time. We have the Coupe de France, the Europa League and the league. It is difficult with the level that PSG are at, but anything can happen.
“My aim is to win a title here, but I have never hidden my desire to play in the Premier League.”
Lyon’s situation at present however is not good. Sitting 13th in the Ligue 1 table, the likelihood of a title is slim to none.
The latest information according to transfer specialist Nicolo Schira is that talks between the parties are underway.
“Arsenal are really interested in Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Edu loves him and has opened talks to try and sign him,” Schira tweeted.
“Let’s see what happens. In the transfer market all the players have a price.
“It’s not a simple deal for Arsenal, but Edu is working and – if arrives an important bid – Aulas could sell Bruno Guimaraes.”
Arsenal need to take advantage of the situation whilst their own stock is on the rise. The opportunity to add a midfielder of Guimaraes’ quality this winter would be a huge boost to the side’s top-four hopes.
At his age, he also has the prospect to become the club’s long-term midfield presence. With the additional encouragement that the young Sambi Lokonga looks an impressive talent to eventually partner the Brazilian.
Mikel Arteta could find a dream spine with the addition of Guimaraes. Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Thomas Partey and the current Lyon man would form a great quartet full of quality and control.
If Arsenal and Edu, in particular, can pull off this move for the club, it could prove transformative for the team’s ambitions now and in the future.
