Chris Sutton picked out Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as the signing of the season after his solid start at his new club.
Mendy arrived from Rennes this summer, tasked with improving their leaky defence, and he has done just that.
He has only conceded one goal in his first four Premier League starts and just two goals in eight matches in all competitions.
Frank Lampard’s side had conceded nine goals in the four Premier League matches they’ve been without the French goalkeeper, with Kepa Arrizabalaga coming under fire for a string of poor performances.
And Sutton, the former Chelsea striker thinks Mendy has been the most important addition of the summer.
Edouard Mendy. Chelsea’s big problem was their goalkeeper kept chucking ’em in,’ Sutton told the Daily Mail. ‘That’s now stopped
I’m not saying Mendy is the greatest keeper in the world, but he’s helped Frank Lampard out of a jam and he cost £22m, which is change down the back of the settee for top-flight clubs.’ Micah Richards, however, thinks Liverpool have done the best piece of business.
New frontman Diogo Jota has made a real impact since arriving from Wolves – scoring seven goals in five starts in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Jota forced his way into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI for the 1-1 draw with Manchester City this weekend.
Klopp opted for a different formation so that Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Jota and Sadio Mane could all be accommodated.
And former Man City and Aston Villa defender Richards thinks he’s surprised everyone since arriving at Anfield.
‘The fact Diogo Jota is now playing to such a level that Liverpool have deployed a front four tells you everything about his impact,’ added Richards.
‘Nobody was expecting this after his £41m move from Wolves.’
