Harry Redknapp, a former manager of Tottenham, has revealed that Frenkie de Jong prefers to play for Chelsea over Manchester United and that he knows this “for a fact.”
Both English competitors are vying to persuade the 25-year-old midfielder of their respective initiatives as Barcelona continues to put pressure on him to leave the club due to an ongoing dispute about postponed salaries and money owing to the Dutch international.
The Red Devils has agreed a £63million base fee back in mid-July but have yet to convince the player himself that Erik ten Hag’s project without Champions League football this season is the right step in his career.
In the meantime, it is also rumored that new owner Todd Boehly is attempting to successfully “hijack” United’s agreement in the hopes that the Champions League factor and living in London would sway the thinking of Barca’s No. 21.
Chelsea is currently in direct talks with the Blaugrana over Marcos Alonso. The issue has more to do with the deferred salary and who will pay the £17 million or so bill that Barcelona hasn’t been able to pay despite their summer shopping spree. De Jong is allegedly more interested in signing with Chelsea than United.
Surprisingly, former Premier League manager Redknapp has revealed that the midfielder prefers Chelsea over any other team if he decides to leave Barcelona this summer. He then added additional context by describing his personal knowledge of the agreement.
He said to The Byline podcast: “De Jong appears to want to join Chelsea.
“He wants to go to Chelsea, of that I am certain. I’ve heard from someone at the absolute top of the club that Man United won’t be able to acquire him.
“He is quite eager to visit Chelsea. Therefore, if he chooses Chelsea, Man United will not be able to sign him, and I am unsure of their future plans. He will be a terrific addition to Chelsea if they manage to sign him.”
