Aston Villa have been cautioned not to be sucked into a time-consuming struggle to recruit Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United this summer, amid reports that he is on Steven Gerrard’s desired list.
The Telegraph reports that Phillips will be on Villa’s shopping list when the transfer market reopens in summer.
Despite the midfielder’s recent declaration that he wants to stay at Elland Road, contract talks between Leeds and Phillips are said to have stagnated.
Villa manager Steven Gerrard is anxious to strengthen his midfield in order to close the gap on the top six, and has previously been linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.
Fans, though, are wary of trying to entice Phillips away from Leeds after the club’s failure to recruit Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse last summer.
Both players had offers rejected by Villa, who chose to stay at their respective clubs, and Villa fans are concerned that Phillips’ pursuit may take a similar course.
One person stated: “Phillips, I believe, will be another JWP scenario. I understand SG’s desire to sign him, but I don’t think it will happen. I suppose only time will tell.”
Another person added: “Although he is the ideal player to sign, there is a 0% likelihood of it occurring until Leeds get relegated. We’ll be wasting our time, just like JWP.”
As one fan put it: “Phillips said the other day that he wants to sign a new deal with Leeds. It reminds me a lot of ESR and JWP.”
“It’s like ESR and JWP all over again,” said another.
