Arsenal have received a major boost in their hopes of signing Joaquin Correa, with the Argentine’s current club Lazio reportedly willing to accept a swap deal involving Lucas Torreira.
Having finished the Premier League season as the lowest scorers in the top eight, the Gunners are seeking to upgrade their attacking options this summer.
One of their biggest areas of need is in attacking midfield, with Martin Odegaard having returned to Real Madrid following the end of his loan spell at the Emirates Stadium.
The Norwegian is unlikely to make that switch a permanent one in the current window, forcing the Gunners to sound out other options in the position.
Correa has emerged as a target after impressing for Lazio in Serie A since moving to Italy from Seville in 2015.
The 26-year-old has become a regular starter for the Italian club, scoring 11 goals and notching six assists in all competitions in the season just gone.
Though he mainly played as either a support striker or in central attacking midfield last term, he does have the ability to play across the pitch in attack.
Correa’s talents are certainly what Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is searching for as he looks to guide a recovery from last year’s disappointing season.
Handing Arsenal a boost in their pursuit is the fact that he expressed his desire to leave in January, with his mind still set on a departure from Lazio.
Now, Il Messaggero report that the Gunners are stepping up their pursuit of the attacker, with Correa said to want an “acceleration” in his situation.
It is claimed that his agent has been attempting to drum up offers from clubs across Europe, though Arsenal are currently the only interested party.
The Gunners though have only offered a fee in the region of £17million for Correa, a sum Lazio describe as “paltry” and one they will not accept.
Correa has a release clause of £68m, though Lazio will reportedly accept an offer in the region of £30m to £35m.
But a potential solution to the current stalemate over a deal appears to have been found, with the Italian news website claiming that there have been developments in “the last few hours”.
Those developments are said to take the form of a potential swap deal involving outcast Torreira, who is set to exit Arsenal this summer.
Torreira spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid, making 19 appearances as Diego Simeone’s side won the La Liga title.
But his time at Arsenal appears to be over, with Arteta not viewing him as an option to partner Thomas Parety in the Gunners’ midfield.
The Uruguayan also wants to depart England this summer, having failed to settle at Arsenal, with Lazio now offering a potential destination.
Il Messaggero state that Arsenal will offer Torreira plus a fee in the region of £17m in exchange for Correa, with such a move believed to suit both clubs.
