Avid Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has offered Mesut Ozil a ‘Covid-secure’ lift to the airport amid speculation the midfielder has reached an agreement to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
Ozil has been frozen out of Mikel Arteta’s plans in north London, despite being the Gunners’ top earner on eye-watering wages of £350,000-a-week, and the 32-year-old playmaker looks certain to have played his final match for the club given his contract expires in the summer.
There have been conflicting rumours regarding Ozil’s future over the last few days, with Football.London suggesting the German could be on his way to MLS side DC United.
However, Turkish publication DHA Spor report that Ozil has been offered an escape route out of the Emirates by Fenerbahce and that their bid to land the former Germany international was gathering pace.
It’s claimed the 2014 World Cup winner – a third-generation Turkish-German – has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal over a switch to Istanbul outfit, with an official announcement expected ‘soon’.
TV personality and journalist Morgan, a well-known Arsenal supporter, has been outspoken with his views on Ozil since the German’s decline and the Good Morning Britain presenter responded to the reports coming out of Turkey with delight.
BOOM! Finally, some good news in 2021!’ Morgan told his 7.7 million followers on Twitter. ‘If you need a (covid-secure) lift to the airport @MesutOzil1088, let me know.’
A transfer move happening this January is widely deemed to be unrealistic, with Ozil repeatedly underlining his desire to see out his contract until it expires.
A return to former team Schalke has been mooted as a possible option for Ozil next summer but Kolasinac has played down speculation his close friend could be set to follow him to the VELTINS-Arena.
‘Ozil and I talked about Schalke but not about whether he wants to come back too,’ Kolasinac told the media after rejoining Schalke on loan from Arsenal this week.
‘He comes from Gelsenkirchen so Schalke is always a topic.’
A switch to DC United is understood to be hugely appealing to Ozil as it would provide an opportunity for him to expand his personal M10 empire in the United States. The MLS club are also offering to introduce Ozil’s 36 Steps Coffee brand at their Audi Field stadium.
