Arsenal have been told of Real Madrid’s intention regarding the future of Martin Odegaard. The attacking midfielder is currently on-loan at the Emirates from the Madrid side.
Odegaard joined the Gunners in the January transfer window on a six-month loan deal. He initially struggled to get into the starting line-up. But has started the club’s last four games, including two in the Premier League.
He also played a key role in Arsenal’s 3-2 late win over Benfica in the round of 32 of the Europa League. But the Gunners are unsure over Odegaard’s future at the Emirates.
There is no option to buy him at the end of his loan contract. And it will be difficult to discuss a deal for him with Real Madrid.
The Los Blancos still see the Norwegian as a key figure within their long-term plans, despite allowing him to join Arsenal in January.
Martin Odegaard to permanently move to Arsenal?
Zinedine Zidane sees Odegaard in his long-term plans at Real Madrid. As a result, the 22-year-old will likely return to the club who bought him when he was just 16.
Odegaard spent the last season also on loan at Real Sociedad, where he displayed some really promising performances. This prompted Real Madrid to bring him back for the 2020-21 season.
But he struggled to cement himself in Zidane’s plan earlier this season. And was ultimately loaned out to Arsenal for the remainder of the season.
He earlier admitted that he would be open to joining the Gunners on a permanent deal. But the north-London club’s hopes of landing him permanently appear to diminish, as Madrid are keen to integrate him into their plans ahead of next season.
The Los Blancos believe that Odegaard will return to the Spanish capital in a much better condition, which will help him develop further at the club.
Arsenal eye Odegaard alternatives
Manager Mikel Arteta has identified several targets if Arsenal fail to land Odegaard on a permanent deal.
As earlier reported, they are eyeing a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Tomas. Also, there is interest in Borussia Monchengladbach’s midfielder Florian Neuhaus.
Now, according to the Mirror, the Gunners have joined Celtic and Rangers in the race for Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph.
Arsenal have been tracking Joseph’s progress for some time. The highly-rated youngster has scored five goals and provided one assist in 14 League One games this season.
The 19-year-old is out of contract this summer. As a result, clubs can sign him for free at the end of the season and Arsenal are keen to land him. Joseph is currently out of action through injury. But he’s a regular starter for the club when fit.
In other news, Ligue 1 club AS Monaco are lining up a summer move for Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette. The fee quoted by the club is £31.5 million. The 29-year-old has struggled for game time this season, despite scoring 10 goals in all competitions.
The Frenchman has fallen out of favor under boss Mikel Arteta and the club are keen to offload him in the coming transfer window.
