Mikel Arteta has reportedly indicated to the Arsenal board that Barcelona’s Riqui Puig is a player he wants to bring to the club. The Gunners have picked up a bit of form in recent weeks with three consecutive wins over Chelsea, Brighton and West Brom.

But they once again looked toothless in attack when they took on Crystal Palace this week with Roy Hodgson’s side grinding out a goalless draw.

No team inside the top half of the table have scored less than Arsenal’s tally of 20 goals in their first 18 games of the season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has looked a shadow of his former self this campaign with much of the criticism put on Arsenal’s midfield for a lack of service.

Arteta has experimented with a number of different players to fill in the No 10 role with Emile Smith Rowe recently being given a chance to make the position his own.

However, it appears as though the Spanish coach remains keen on bolstering his midfield options further.

And according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona’s Puig is high on Arteta’s wishlist.

Speaking back in September, Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman publicly stated that he wanted to send the 21-year-old out on loan as he couldn’t promise the Spaniard regular minutes.

The La Masia graduate has been tipped for a bright future having broken through the ranks at Barcelona with former Gunners star Cesc Fabregas likening him to Andres Iniesta.

“Riqui can become like Iniesta, for example, if coaches trust him,” he said. “I know that comparing him with Andres are big words but such a player could cost a fortune on today’s market.”

But Puig is reportedly desperate to stay and prove himself at the Nou Camp, despite the lack of game time under Koeman.

Another area Arteta is keen to bring in reinforcements before the end of the January transfer window is in goal.

Alex Runarsson has failed to convince the Arsenal boss since he was signed from Dijon last summer.

With Matt Macey now joining Hibernian, there is shortage of options for Arteta to provide Bernd Leno with cover.

We are assessing the situation with the three positions on the goalkeeping area and we will find a different solution, probably in this window,” he said.

“There is nothing there yet.

“We are assessing what is going to happen with the three positions.

“The discussion we had in the summer within the club are a little bit different to what actually happened because of the transfer window and the situation that developed with Emi.

“We didn’t have much time to do what we really wanted to do and we decided to assess the situation in this window which is what we are trying to do and we will make a decision on how we want to move forward in those three positions
